First and foremost I teach that Soccer is a thinking game. Every practice builds on that theme, helping the players to develop a sense of forethought into every play, develop a sense of creativity in how they might approach any situation in during a game.
Game time is spent identifying "teachable moments" to the girls based on what's happening in the game. I believe in having a skills inventory of the players and starting the strongest 8 in their strongest respective positions. Then, quickly substituting players in to give the less experienced players game touches on the ball, and move players throughout the game into their 2nd & 3rd positions. Goal: build a set of players that identify themselves as soccer players first, position players (ie, forward, or mid) second.
Second major philosophical point: players play like they practice...I expect them to play hard during practice, and use a lot of ball touching drills to bring a sense of fun. I use a lot of scrimmage activity to get a feel for the game, rehearse fundamentals (ie, dribbling) for warm-ups to develop player comfort level & master, and work out drills to improve specific things from lessons learned in previous game.
